Out of Place

2024 | 12” x 9” | Watercolor, colored pencil

This work explores the weight of isolation and emotional turbulence through a fragmented self-portrait. The figures represent a spectrum of my experiences—anger, sadness, apathy, and vulnerability—each together yet disconnected, reflecting the dissonance of navigating an environment where I feel unwelcome. As the only openly queer, neurodivergent member of the team, I often felt othered, my identity met with indifference rather than curiosity. Being in rural Indiana amplified this alienation; public spaces caused anxiety, as conversations celebrating political figures and ideologies against my values underscored my feeling of displacement. Facing these negative emotions daily, with no escape or relief, created a suffocating environment—one where the persistence of discomfort and alienation felt inescapable.
